The Proper Role for AI

What is the proper role of AI in society?

It is that of a monitored, reviewed assistant. It is a brilliant addition to civilization in that role. It's when one starts talking about autonomy and agency that things go wrong. Autonomy is the stuff of General Artificial Intelligence which is far beyond our capabilities. AI as constituted is not anywhere near reliable enough for critical work flows. Certainly 95% accuracy is obtainable for current AI systems. That's not good enough for critical situations unless there's a human in the loop to troubleshoot the AI responses.

Anyone possessing any command of prompting at all who has used a chatbot will be hugely impressed by the performances elicited. That's the problem. As impressive as those performances are, they are not consistent nor reliable enough for autonomous deployment as people who have tried it have found out.

AI is totally unsuitable for the medical field as an agent where it is showing up.

The bottom line of our times is that it's a little late in the game to not be understanding what AI can and cannot do. It's homework time. Take a few hours and study AI. It's a condition of existence in the 21st century.
