There's a lot of nonsense coming out of certain quarters by people who have never written a computer program and know very little mathematics about how AI isn't very smart and that nonsense is finding its way into mainstream media. The trope is to tell it, in an inexpert fashion, to do something and then make a major case out of its shortcomings.
Artificial intelligence is in fact fairly smart and more than adequate to qualify as a boon to the intellectual life of humans. You have to assign it a proper role in your deliberations, a child of a lesser god as collaborator, and you have to have some understanding of how it orders usefulness by nonlinear regression, by the assignment of weights to tokens in a probability calculation of what token or word comes next in a sensible conversation.
You also have to know how to prompt it to do what you want it to do. You have to provide a context, a book, a journal report, a version of history, to orient it. Then you have to set it to a specific task. In intellectual activity you should provide an hypothesis for it to evaluate and apply to a body of information.Trust me the intelligence of the process it goes through will impress you.
There is a term for xenophobic propagandists. We call them Luddites. There is also another side to the darkness, cheerleaders of technology. Don't be either one. Take this derived gift of Enke and use it to extend, maintain, and defend civilization. It is up to the job, I assure you.
Do Well and Be Well
