AI as Collaborator

AI has proceeded far enough with enough bizarre criticism to warrant a classification in intellectual society, ‘indoctrinaires’. These are the people of received knowledge who deal in authority and official line. This is where the vicious criticism of AI originates. They have been betrayed, AI is not infallible. In fact it often hallucinates. If they cannot fixate on its responses as fact it's no good to them.

The standard in the intellectual community since Peirce is to deal in small ‘t’ truth. We are pragmatists seeking better explanations. We can handle the occasional error because we are processing through the AI response, not accepting it on faith.

Which brings us to the proper role of AI in intellectual culture, that of collaborator in the intellectual quest. It is as a child of a lesser god, a sounding board and critic, a kind of Mr Spock to a kind of Captain Kirk.

It is a valuable companion in that role but never so valuable as when it is prompted to provide an unfriendly critique of a piece of work. Responding to that criticism, not always correct, engenders a love of excellence.

AI should be celebrated in its proper role as a boon to intellectual life and a contributor to civilization.
