Meaning and Economics

In all this talk of elegant solutions to the problem of smart automation I myself lose sight of an economy as a meaning generator. The essential assumption of ergonomic economics is that economics serves, at some point, a humane end or it lacks any logical basis at all. That humane end has been as a meaning generator.

Meaning is a matter of structure and fit. The production process is a meaning structure. When one's behavior “fits” that structure it bestows meaning on that behavior. When one removes that production process largely from human purview, the autonomous automated machine economy, one denies the creation of half of economic meaning in individual lives. Without that production meaning there is only the meaning inherent in being a demand agent.

As a citizen and holder of a voting share of the stock of a GSE corporation redistributing fees and tariffs as dividends there is a legitimate transfer of wealth providing the basis of demand agency and providing meaning to the behavior of agents and which could easily provide the capital for craftwork enterprise and production meaning including 3D printing and AI CAD/CAM. The venues of the future in production and meaning open before us.
