We are living in the ruins of Byzantium. The Grand Narrative of Western Civilization is increasingly irrelevant and has been so since the railroads went into business. Technology destroyed that myth because it could not comprehend the power and the scope of the steam engine.
Homer never dreamed of the Titanic.
Dirigisme addressing unemployment which sees its origins in the social question in the revolutions of 1848 structured the chaos at the end of feudalism, which died a natural death.
Lancelot never dreamed of a Gatling gun.
Einstein's 1905 paper on Relativity gave us a new intellectual universe that is beyond the reach of most and destroyed what was left of the Narrative.
Merlin never dreamed of quantum mechanics.
So we keep on keeping on in deep chaos in the confusion of the new and the deeply felt absence of the Narrative, a Yarvinesque nostalgia for systems long failed as irrelevant.
