The Economic Model:
First, Bespoke manufacture requires seed money. As it becomes operational, it is pay as it goes. Acquiring the paradigms and databases of the engineering, software, and managerial skill sets that are necessary are expensive. However this cost is being addressed with free college and part-time Living Wage employment.
There is also the cost of the capital goods.he 3D printers, AI driven robots, and various specific tools must be purchased. Enlightened venture capital, perhaps a government corporation, that is only out for a consistent reliable ROI which is the kind of return Bespoke Production generates must bear these costs.
Second, Bespoke manufacture requires a virtual marketplace, a sort of advanced Amazon with its vendors. In fact, Amazon itself is moving in this direction. Here, design requests are initiated, contracts negotiated, accounts receivable generated, materials purchased, and products created.
Some of the operating assumptions of mass industrial production do not apply appropriately to Bespoke Production, economies of scale, N/A, the god of productivity, N/A, brick and mortar retail, N/A, aggregate demand, just a number of limited utility.
Other measures have some validity, GDP, in terms of interest rates and strength of currency. The focus of Bespoke Production is on compensatory playing to human strengths, vision, managerial skill, engineering cleverness. It is the milieu of human efficiency and productivity, not machine.
This is disruption so monumental that wrapping one's brain around it is a serious intellectual exercise. I attempt that exercise in the next blog.
